The question you have to ask yourself (or Me!) is what is right social strategy for your business?
I am often asked the question about where to start with social media for new businesses. The question you have to ask yourself (or Me!) is what is the right social media strategy for your business? There isn't a one size fits all approach for everyone and it really depends on a number of questions, that I'll discuss below.
To simplify things, a new online jewellery business will have a very different use of social media to a property investor per say.
We are constantly overwhelmed with requests to follow Instagram/Facebook/LinkedIn pages, to name a few, but the question is, are all of these necessary? How many of these accounts that you have been asked to follow are now dormant? Now don't get me wrong, I absolutely love love love the fact that we have new and local businesses popping up each day. (#SupportLocal) It's so admirable that people are feeling empowered to showcase their business online and there are so many tools to help us, however due to this, new businesses often feel the pressure to be present on every platform.
I've seen this a lot within the hospitality industry where Hotel Managers want to set up an Instagram Page for their new lobby coffee shop. Now, I understand why they are asking, they are so passionate about this new concept that they have invested a lot of money in, however, is that really the best way to invest time and money? Could they refocus this energy on their hotel Instagram account, or better yet, have marketing within your in-room TV to tempt guests into buying that freshly baked croissant?
In the same vein, I would urge businesses to think about the following questions before setting up their social accounts:
What is your ultimate goal? E.g. social engagement, lead generation, website sales?
Who is your target audience and what platform/s do they use?
If you were the consumer, where would you go for this service and what are you most receptive to on social?
Will you be able to dedicate time/resource and money to keeping these accounts active for the foreseeable future?
Based on the above, you will be able to get an indication of whether it may be Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Reviews or a combination. Platforms are evolving within themselves, for example Instagram Stories, Facebook Shop, therefore you may find that one or two are sufficient to showcase your content. You can even do one at a time and grow your presence on different channels over time. This will then allow you to invest your time and money on the right platform and will also allow you to maintain a long term social strategy. Let me know if you have any questions regarding setting up a social media for your business, I'll be happy to help!
